National Science Foundation Scholarships

Announcing the fall 2010 application process for the Los Rios NSF Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics scholarships. MESA students are very competitive for these scholarships, and even if you are not yet a stellar student with a stunning GPA, this may still be for you. Every MESA student should consider applying.

The scholarships are competitive on a district-wide level. Awarded on a semester by semester basis, scholars may receive up to $4000 per year for up to two years. The actual award is based on financial need.

Students receiving the scholarship will also participate in professional development activities as a condition of their award.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Los Rios NSF STEM scholarship, a student:

  1. Must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, an alien admitted as a refugee, or an alien lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence;
  2. Must have a current FAFSA application indicating a documented financial need for monetary aid;
  3. Must be enrolled in 12 or more units in the transfer programs of biological sciences, physical sciences, computer and information sciences, geosciences, engineering, mathematics, or associated technology areas;
  4. and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better for all courses taken within the district.
Note: students with a GPA of less than 3.0 or with no established GPA in the district are encouraged to apply, with additional documentation (see application instructions).

The NSF stipulates that clinical majors in the health professions are ineligible. Majors such as nursing, physician’s assistant, or funeral science are not eligible, even if transferring to a four year program. Pre-medicine, pre-dental and pre-pharmacy are not considered clinical, and are eligible.
